BITE MARKS AND FORENSIC DENTISTRY

Sometimes criminals in a fit of emotion bite their victims, leaving incriminating bite marks. In other cases, old bite marks can be made visible by shining ultraviolet light on a victim’s skin. Melanocytes—skin cells that produce the dark pigment responsible for tanning—form around the margins of wounds. These pigmented cells absorb ultraviolet light. If old bite wounds are illuminated by ultraviolet light, the bite marks appear and may be photographed with a scale, such as a ruler, beside them. A forensic dentist can then compare these bite marks with those of a suspect to see if they match.
